The problem

Why Hondar Yaroslava created the Wind Turbine for Water Aeration.

My hometown, Sloviansk, inspired me to create this invention. As a child, I spent a lot of time around its lakes, which made me care about their condition and the life they support.

I noticed that insufficient oxygen in water can become a serious problem for aquatic ecosystems. When oxygen cannot reach deeper layers of a water body, living organisms there may not have the conditions they need to survive.

The problem can become more significant during warm and calm periods, when natural water circulation is limited. I wanted to find a way to help move oxygen-rich water into deeper layers and support healthier aquatic environments without relying on electricity or complex infrastructure.

The invention

How the Wind Turbine for Water Aeration works.

My solution is a floating Savonius wind turbine connected to an Archimedes' screw. The turbine captures wind energy and converts it into rotational motion, which drives the screw beneath the water surface.

As the screw rotates, it moves oxygen-rich surface water downward, creating vertical circulation and helping distribute oxygen to deeper layers of the water body.

I chose the Savonius turbine because of its simple construction and ability to operate at relatively low wind speeds. Wind is a free and renewable energy source, so the system can operate without an external power supply.

The prototype was built and tested to demonstrate that wind energy can be converted into useful water movement for aeration.
