The problem

Why Микола Гриценко created the AreaScan: Autonomous Indoor Mapper.

Traditional indoor surveying relies heavily on manual tools like tape measures and handheld laser meters. In complex room geometries — featuring non-rectangular layouts, curved walls, or heavily cluttered interiors — these manual workflows become slow, labor-intensive, and prone to cumulative human error. Minor measurement mistakes early in the surveying phase cause severe project delays and costly material overspending during renovation. On the other hand, professional 3D LiDAR systems (Leica, Faro) cost $15,000 to $80,000+, making them financially inaccessible to small design studios, independent architects, and local renovation teams. Smartphone LiDAR apps depend on flagship hardware, require manual handling, and struggle with cluttered environments. I created AreaScan to bridge this critical gap. AreaScan is an accessible, automated cyber-physical platform that democratizes indoor surveying. By combining station-based autonomous scanning with embedded sensor fusion, AreaScan filters out furniture noise and automatically generates accurate 2D vector plans and net usable floor area calculations — delivering automated surveys at a tiny fraction of commercial LiDAR costs. Thus, my invention provides an essential tool for indoor spaces, turning inaccurate manual workflows into accessible automated surveying without heavy capital investments.

Engineering philosophy is simple: to give an accessible embedded system over expensive LiDAR systems

The invention

How the AreaScan: Autonomous Indoor Mapper works.

AreaScan operates as a cyber-physical system using a station-based scanning methodology. To eliminate mechanical vibration noise, the robot navigates to a station, stops completely, performs a 360-degree scan, and moves to the next station. Prototype Evolution & Active Hardware Upgrade: The attached media demonstrates the working MVP baseline (equipped with HC-SR04 ultrasonic ranging and MPU-6050 IMU). The platform is currently undergoing an active hardware transition to a distributed dual-MCU system:
  1. Keyestudio Uno controls low-level 4WD motor kinematics.
  2. ESP32 handles high-level sensor data fusion, logic, and wireless Wi-Fi telemetry streaming.
Sensors & Target Accuracy Roadmap:
  • VL53L1X ToF Laser Sensor (replacing HC-SR04) captures millimeter-precise distance measurements.
  • BNO055 9-DOF IMU provides zero-drift orientation tracking.
  • PMW3901 Optical Flow tracks ground movement to bypass wheel-slip odometry errors.
  • VL53L0X ToF lasers managed via a TCA9548A I2C multiplexer enable expanded multi-angle mapping.
The software ecosystem transforms raw spatial data into clean architectural plans. A native desktop application filters internal clutter (chairs, table legs) and reconstructs closed wall perimeters. Meanwhile, a web platform powered by a secure backend manages user authentication, database persistence, scan history for each digital profile, and real-time floor plan visualization in web browsers.

What makes AreaScan unique? It integrates a hardware device and software app into a single ecosystem
